We’re all aware of the seemingly ongoing war between motorists and cyclists, but this is next level.

Cyclists Jandre du Raan and Brendon Jacobs were out for a morning ride to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve when things suddenly went horribly wrong.

Jandre was cycling back from the gate when he hit a pothole. Brendon then moved alongside him to check if his wheels were okay.

A few seconds later they heard a car hoot, before a blue Toyota vehicle moved in close to them and tried to knock them off their bikes.

The Toyota then stopped, made a U-turn and came after them once more.

Brendan shared a video of the attack on Facebook:

Jandre spoke to TimeLIVE about what happened next, with the images below from Jacobs’ post:

The car missed them, drove past, stopped, the driver jumped out, picked up a stick and beat them.

Du Raan said: “He was swearing at us, but after all those shots to the head I can’t tell you what he said.”

Next, another car stopped. Three men and two women jumped out and joined in beating the cyclists.

“One of the people hit me with a rock against the head… I can’t tell you if it was five seconds or five hours. At that moment it felt like an eternity,” Du Raan said…

“It’s still a big shock. It’s as if it is not a reality what happened. I don’t think it has sunk in yet how close I was to dying that day.”

None of the attackers stole anything, which suggests that the assault happened for the sake of the assault.

The incident was reported to Stellebosch police (they seem to have their hands full at the moment), and the investigation is ongoing.
