Netflix has been overrun with holiday movies about Christmas, family, and what happens to actors when they don’t secure their first-choice roles and have to take what they can get.
What I really want to see is a movie that showcases the reality of what it means to have your relatives descend on your living space for a couple of days.
If you’re hosting this year, you know what I’m talking about. Instead of relaxing once you take leave, you’re going to have to reorganise your home into a space that can accommodate more people than it’s designed to hold.
You could curl into a ball and cry at the thought of all that hard labour, or you could seize the day and use this as an opportunity to give your space a much-needed makeover.
I find that watching TV or listening to a podcast usually takes the edge off when I’m cleaning.
The following three shows do double-duty. They’ll inspire you, and keep you entertained while you clear out those cupboards:
The Inspiration
You can find episodes of Hoarders on YouTube. After two episodes, I was ready to throw out everything that I own and start over. It’s one of those shows that makes you question every trinket you’ve ever held on to for ‘sentimental reasons’.
This show will give you the boost you need to stop procrastinating and secure that storage unit.
The Lesson
For those of you who don’t know, Marie Kondo is famous for her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, which encouraged people to purge their over-cluttered houses of anything that didn’t bring them joy.
Thanks to the series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, a new wave of ‘Kondoites’ are adopting the minimalist life in a big way – and it’s a good thing.
Kondo will encourage you to throw out the trash and donate the rest to charity organisations, but what about the stuff that is no longer useful, but holds sentimental value?
Stor-Age, South Africa’s leading self-storage brand, provides secure self-storage units tailored to your needs for as long as you need them.
They’ll also provide you with a range of self-storage boxes, padlocks, bubble wrap, tape, and other self-storage packaging items to make your journey to that minimalist life that much easier.
Added bonus – sign up here and score 50% off your first month, and you can then renew on a month-by-month basis.
Catch Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix.
The Distraction
Now that you’re motivated and have the tools you need to get organised, you’ll need something to keep you entertained while you clean.
Watching people transform spaces from drab to fabulous in Interior design Masters on BBC and Netflix will keep you motivated, and get your creative juices flowing.
Plus, British reality TV is surprisingly relaxing. Nobody gets overly emotional and everyone is friendly.
Right, you’re all set so you’d better get on with it.
That house isn’t going to clean and declutter itself.
