Are you really Capetonian if you haven’t wasted time in traffic?

Sure, talking about the traffic is almost as tedious as the traffic itself, albeit unavoidable if you didn’t factor at least half an hour of leeway into your travel plans.

When it comes to the most congested city in South Africa, a war has been raging between Joburg and Cape Town since the advent of cars.

Last year, Jozi took the top spot, and Cape Town was a little smug about it, even though we still spend nearly a full week of accumulated time staring at the personalised number plate of the person sitting in front of us in bumper to bumper rush-hour traffic.

Now, new data from the 2019 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecshows show that we should tone down the smugness because statistics have placed the Mother City at the top of the list, according to TimesLIVE.

“Cape Town has been named among 30 of the world’s most congested cities in the 2019 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard.

The city also again emerged as the most congested in SA, with drivers spending an average of 124 hours a year in traffic, beating Johannesburg which came second with 74 hours and Pretoria third with 65 hours,” TimesLIVE detailed.

You can check out the list of the most congested cities in the world, here.

Thankfully we didn’t make the top 10.

Speaking of, here are the top 10 most congested cities in South Africa:

    1. Cape Town
    2. Johannesburg
    3. Pretoria
    4. Pietermaritzburg
    5. Port Elizabeth
    6. Durban
    7. East London
    8. Bloemfontein
    9. Vanderbijlpark
    10. Welkom

    Yeah, we’re not that surprised.

If your commute leaves you gripping the steering wheel in frustration, distract yourself with one of these excellent podcasts.

    Good luck out there.
