The small Austrian village of Fucking, located in the municipality of Tarsdorf, in the Innviertel region of western Upper Austria, will be changing its name to Fugging after 1 000 years, following a big local push.
That local push, by the way, comes from the village’s 106 residents, known as Fuckingers.
It would be largely unremarkable was it not for its name, which has no meaning in German, but has made the town a target for British tourists and sign-stealers for decades, causing the local municipality to replace the signs with a theft-resistant variety.
According to News18, Andrea Holzner, the mayor of Tarsdorf, has confirmed the name change, but refused to comment on why they’ve made the decision.
I think it’s rather obvious.
The community, which dates back to at least 1070, was named after a man called Focko in the sixth century, long before the word became an expletive.
In 2018, Pornhub was offering free premium access to residents of Fucking and towns with other suggestive names like Titz in Germany or Big Beaver in America. It’s unclear whether residents of Fucking took the site up on its offer.
Nearby towns Oberfucking and Unterfucking may also follow suit.
With the pending name change set to happen from January 1, 2021, maybe the locals can finally enjoy some fugging peace.
