Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria is where some of South Africa’s most notorious criminals, like Oscar Pistorius and apartheid death-squad leader Eugene de Kock, have been housed.

De Kock holds the nickname “Prime Evil” if that tells you anything. He was released last year. Pistorius is now at Atteridgeville Correctional Centre.

Back to Kgosi Mampuru II, which is currently the site of a Shawshank Redemption-style breakout.

On Wednesday, two inmates broke out by digging a hole in the wall of their cell in A Section using a sharp object, which is believed to have been stolen from the prison’s workshop.

SowetanLIVE reports that Thabo Zacharia Muyambo was serving a life sentence for 21 charges including rape, robbery and kidnapping, while Johannes Chauke was serving 20 years for housebreaking offences.

Inmates at the facility have confirmed the escape.

“The prison officials found out about the escape this morning [Wednesday]. Right now all inmates in A Section are locked up. We think they will be conducting a search in that section again because it is compulsory to establish if more inmates escaped,” said an inmate.

Correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says that a manhunt has been launched and that authorities are “hot on the heels” of the criminals.

“The department has also initiated an internal investigation into this incident. Members of the public are urged to contact the nearest police station should they come into contact with them,” said Nxumalo

Images shared of the escape show the hole dug out of the wall. The escapees appear to have used sheets or bedding to drop to the ground:

If you come into contact with these men call the cops.

    Don’t approach them.
