Let’s face it, the internet being switched off is the only major drama during load shedding. Random battery-powered lighting is an easy solution for the lights going out, and a charged blue-tooth speaker keeps those Rob Cohen mixes playing.

The fridge will stay cold and if your devices are charged then you’re golden. But what use are they without internet? And how do you stream Spotify? Especially in places with weak cellphone signal (show of hands, half of Constantia).

I was about to push the button on some fancy ‘inverter’ for our home – to keep the power on during load shedding – but was reluctant due to the price. I knew in the back of my mind I was missing something. I knew the only issue was the internet. But you can’t charge an internet router.

That’s when I got Googling, and found this ABSOLUTELY BEAUTY!

It’s basically a glorified power bank, but the thing is it’s got a 220V output, handling a total of 80W! So it can power your router during lockdown.

And your laptop if you want – and your DStv (if you still rock a DStv) – for R1 999. It’s light as well, for what it does. Imagine cruising around with a 220V plug point? You’ll be ready to save the day at any given moment.

The next size up can handle 150W and costs R2 999, which can power my TV. So if your router is near your TV, you could have the internet going AND your TV. You literally wouldn’t know the power was off, especially on the weekend when we use mainly candles in the evening. ‘Cos we’re romantic like that.

Here’s the link to the 150W one on Takealot – I can’t find the 80W one there anymore. Have a Google and I’m sure you’ll find it.

Or check out the local manufacturer’s website here to find out where to get them.
