Hey, everyone, I am a Millennial and I am out of touch.
It is such a challenge to keep up.
Live, laugh, love, man.
Or don’t. Actually, we would prefer it if you didn’t.
I’ve only just caught up with the reason Gen Z’s (anyone born between the 1990s and 2010s) keep poking the insides of their arms.
It’s often used by NBA stars and other sportsmen but has since been adopted by anyone who’s trying to communicate that they’re cold-blooded and able to handle pressure really well: “ice in my veins”.
Here’s a reference, in case you have no idea what I am on about:
But I digress…
While new generations keep popping up, creating their own little zeitgeisty trends, older one’s keep evolving, too, to the point that some of them are so deliberately behind on new trends that there’s now a word for it.
The word is ‘Cheugy’.
Urban Dictionary breaks it down:
[It is] the opposite of trendy. Stylish in middle school and high school but no longer in style. Used when someone still follows these out of date trends. This may include but not be limited to fashion, habits on social media, usage of slang, etc.
Then, via ITK, we also have a TikTok user named Hal, who gives us the full low-down:
She said things that give off “I got married at 20 vibes” or are teased for having “Millennial or girlboss energy” are cheugy.
Here she is on TikTok:

Hal is the director behind the @cheuglife Instagram account, which seems to be the definitive source for all things cheugy at the moment.
According to her, anything with a well-meaning and cliched caption is cheugy:

“live, laugh, love” is the mother of anything cheugy:

Cheugy shouldn’t be confused with ‘basic’, as it has a slightly different meaning:
Basic implies that people are ignorant toward new trends so they fall into old ones, but cheugy implies that they simply choose to conform to older styles. That’s just their taste.
Many people are feeling a little offended by the term, but Hal admits we all have a little cheug in us.
I have a sparkly dairy.
So cheugy…
