We may still be waiting a long time for that much-discussed Formula 1 race in Cape Town.

It doesn’t appear that there’s been a great deal of movement on that front.

At least South African motorsport fans can celebrate the impending arrival of the ABB FIA Formula E, which is expected to descend upon Cape Town in 2023.

There are still a few boxes to be ticked – the track is subject to approval by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council – but the route promises to be one of the fastest of the all-electric race series.

If all goes ahead, Cape Town will join the likes of Monaco, Mexico City, Berlin, London, and New York as cities hosting an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship race.

More via Formula E’s official site:

The Cape Town E-Prix will start at the Green Point precinct’s Vlei Road, where the field of world-class drivers will race with Signal Hill as a backdrop.

Then it’s a left turn into Helen Suzman Boulevard, and another left into Granger Bay Boulevard, presenting the racers with two sharp chicanes.

Drivers will then head along the ocean front on Mouille Point’s Beach Road, before taking a sharp left-hander into Fritz Sonnenberg Road and a final right to reach the finish line.

Let’s plot that out:

I’ll hazard a guess that thanks to the superior skill of the people behind the wheel, we are unlikely to see a repeat of 2020’s infamous Helen Suzman Boulevard crash involving a McLaren 720S and a Lamborghini Huracan Performante.

Work will need to be undertaken to prepare the track. Construction is set to begin in April and is slated for completion by December 2022.

Premier of the Western Cape Alan Winde is excited, calling the event “a perfect opportunity to showcase our destination as an attractive place for tourism and investment”.

Better hope Cape Town is off the Eskom grid by then. Can’t have all those powerful vehicles and no way to charge them.
