There was a reward of up to R100 000 for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the man dubbed Gauteng’s most wanted suspect, Mbuso Ndabazovela Biyela.
But the police have just confirmed that his reign of terror is officially over.
In the early hours of this morning, Biyela was shot and killed in a police operation in Weenen, KwaZulu-Natal.
Per Jacaranda FM, the notorious criminal had been on the run after being accused of around eight murders, including that of a police officer in 2021:
Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili says Biyela was previously arrested in both KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng for murder in August 2020 and October 2021 respectively, but he managed to escape from custody.
He was also a suspect in carjackings committed between 2017 and 2022 in Jabulani, Soweto, Lenasia, and Nquthu.

Muridili said via EWN that a multi-disciplinary task team managed to trace Biyela to a house in Weenen, where the fatal shoot-out occurred:
“A team tactically approached the house where Biyela was hiding but when he spotted them, he started firing toward the members who were forced to retaliate. Biyela was fatally wounded. None of our members sustained injuries,” Muridili said.
They also recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at that house, too.
IOL reported that Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela has thanked the police and the public, as “together we have ensured the end of Biyela’s reign of terror”.
