South Africans love a good Toyota bakkie.

The brand has quickly climbed the ranks of the most-loved vehicles in the country, with the automakers managing to sell a substantial number of new and used units at the beginning of the year.

But when it comes to fuel efficiency, something that more and more Saffas are forced to consider now as the petrol prices skyrocket, there are other brands that lead the charge ahead of Toyota.

While the ever-popular Toyota Hilux only managed around 1 368 vehicle sales in and around May 2022 – which is almost half the number sold in April (2 788 units) by the way – Ford Ranger slipped in and became South Africa’s best-selling bakkie, according to BusinessTech.

Per data from TopAuto, Ford Ranger sold a total of 1 548 units in May.

The Hilux numbers have taken a knock as a result of stock challenges caused by local and global supply chain issues, as well as the KwaZulu-Natal flood damage putting Toyota’s manufacturing plant out of commission.

As a result, sales of the Hilux have been put on the back-burner, while general Toyota sales are also expected to be quite limited for the next few months.

While this isn’t great news for the manufacturers, it gives customers a chance to explore the other bakkie options, especially those that are a little less fuel-guzzling:

With regard to fuel consumption, the Ford Ranger was not only the top-selling but the most fuel-efficient bakkie on the provided list with only 6,5L/100km compared to the highest guzzler the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 with more than double at 13,6L/100km.

The Toyota Hilux in comparison uses around 10,7L/100km, which is sure to make your wallet ache every time you fill up at the garage.

Even though the Mazda BT-50 only sold 19 units in the month of May, it’s fuel-consumption is second best at 6,6L/100km:

The Isuzu D-Max comes in third overall, managing to sell 1 631 units while guzzling 7,3L/100km:

Following that, the Nissan NP200 sold 1 066 units and needs around 8,1L/100km, while the Mahindra Pik Up sold around 688 units and can manage 7,9L/100km.

There you have it, some of the best-selling bakkies in South Africa right now with fuel efficiency calculated in, because sjoe, we really need to save as much as we can right now.
