A Western Cape classroom exploded into pure chaos, with students hurling each other over desks and throwing punches and kicks.

Hoërskool George in the Western Cape confirmed that the fight had broken out on its premises last week after a video of the incident caught some unwanted attention on social media.

The high school made it known that it was an isolated incident that took place before the start of a school day and was mostly sparked by students “who have no academic interest at school”, per Opera News.

The brawl resulted in 11 pupils being suspended, confirmed Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape’s education department.

The school released a statement on Facebook saying the fight likely started due to something that happened “between friend groups” over the weekend.

The statement, per The South African‘s translation, goes on to condemn the scuffle, the student, and parents involved:

“The situation was defused and the parties involved isolated, so that an investigation could be carried out into the incident.”

“This stems from incidents that happen between groups at weekends and then spill over to the school. We have a small group of learners who have no academic interest at school, with little to no interest from their parents. The evidence is clearly reflected in their academic results.”

“It is regrettable that there are people in the community who are just waiting for an opportunity to post these types of incidents on social media and thus spread negativity, seek sensation and put institutions in a bad light and discredit them.”
