Although this year’s Emmy Awards saw several repeat winners, there were also a few moving moments that came from a handful of surprise names.

Yesterday evening’s ceremony took off at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles with a three-hour telecast hosted by SNL veteran Kenan Thompson.

Ted Lasso was crowned best comedy series and Succession, the 2020 best drama winner and most nominated series of the evening with 25, was the best drama.

    No surprises there.

HBO Max’s The White Lotus took the award for top limited series.

Besides Hacks‘ star Jean Smart winning as outstanding actress in a comedy series and Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis once again taking top honour for actor in a comedy series, there were also a few other notable wins, per The Guardian:

The night’s spoilers to the clear favorites also offered the few rejoinders to the Emmys’ lingering issues with diversity, a year after a broadcast which handed no acting awards to people of color.

Squid Game, the first non-English language series ever nominated for best drama, kept Succession from taking a full sweep with wins for director Hwang Dong-hyuk and star Lee Jung-jae, the first person to win an acting award for a non-English language performance.

The best thank you speeches have to go to pop singer Lizzo who won best competition series for Watch Out for The Big Grrrls:

“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was someone like me in the media,” she said through tears. “Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me.”

“If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I would be like, ‘You’re going to see that person … but, bitch, it’s going to have to be you.’”

And Abbott Elementary‘s best-supporting actress Sheryl Lee Ralph:

There was also Jennifer Coolidge being hilariously herself and explaining that she “took a lavender bath tonight, and um, right before the show, and it made me swell up inside my dress, and I’m having a hard time speaking”.

She was speaking while accepting her award for best supporting actress in The White Lotus:
