A father and son were arrested in Spain for fraud after reporting the car they crashed on a racing track was stolen.

The Spanish driving enthusiast and his son initially allegedly claimed that their car was stolen, reporting the matter to their insurance company in January last year.

The unnamed father said that his previous generation Renault Megane RS, was stolen in the town of Langreo, located in the north of Spain, and subsequently stripped for parts.

He was given a nice €12 000 (around R230 000 at current exchange rates) payout by his insurer.

However, the police noticed a few inconsistencies in the report and started investigating the insurance claim, noted CarScoop:

Police allege that the Renault Megane Coupe in question was crashed in late 2021 at the Circuito del Jarama in Madrid, per Periodismo del Motor. They claim that the car never returned to the Asturia region, where the father and son live.

The main evidence against them turned out to be a video of the car crashing at the Circuito del Jarama racetrack, which occurred long before it was claimed to be stolen:

In a video shared by the police, the car can be seen coming out of a corner, spearing into a wall, and rolling several times, before landing on its roof. Fortunately, both the driver and passenger emerge from the vehicle, apparently unscathed, but the damage to the car is substantial.

    Have a look:

The video did the rounds on social media, which definitely helped tip off authorities that something was off with their claims.

The Citizen notes that according to Spanish law, if someone is found guilty of fraud above €400 (R7 819), they can face jail time of up to eight years in addition to a fine.

The father and his son were sentenced to an unspecified period in jail and although unconfirmed, will likely be required to pay back the €12 000 that they defrauded the insurance company out of.
