Mark Zuckerberg’s version of Twitter is off to a strong start.
Threads has drawn more than 23 million sign-ups since its launch Wednesday night, according to badges that show up on Instagram when people join the new app.
Zuckerberg boasted that Threads drew 10 million sign-ups in seven hours, and although it’s still a drop in the ocean compared to Twitter, it’s a blerrie good start. Whether it’s a serious contender for the hearts and minds of Tweeters everywhere, only time will tell.
“It’s easy to get a bunch of people to sign up,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in a video posted from what appeared to be his bed. “It’s hard to build something people want to keep using. Quite the first day.”
Very true. Today it’s hot, tomorrow not. But if you must have another app, check out the trippy website here.
Threads is still a very simple platform lacking many of the features of Twitter, such as direct messaging. It also only shows people a feed of posts recommended by the app, which doesn’t sound like a healthy way to be informed. A feed with only people a user follow is in development, so too are a search function and hashtags.
Threads launched with some features that give the user the ability to self-moderate, such as hiding specific words and phrases, but who will take the reigns on what is to be allowed is anyone’s guess.Threads seemed to be tracking as the most discussed topic on Twitter yesterday, although it wasn’t featured on its trending topics.
It’s going to be a hell of a time keeping track of who said what on Threads and what was said by whom on Twitter. So many voices yet so little consensus. Whether Threads is going to be a Twitter Lite or just create another soapbox for village idiots depends on whether it survives its teenage years.
Unlike with other chatty apps, I doubt if Twitter will be able to just buy and absorbs Zuckerberg’s challenger. Come to think of it, the whole cage fight spectacle just took on a whole new dimension. Maybe they should fight over it.
The winner gets the opponent’s app, the loser has to use only Myspace from then on. Throw in Youtube and TikTok and we got ourselves a tag-team WWE-style.
