Where To Put Your Preloved Clothes to Better Use in Cape Town’s CBD

As much as you hope to be able to fit into last summer's clothes, the sad reality is that those clothes will likely be buried in the back of your cupboard for a few years. Maybe it's time for some spring cleaning, and with that, doing some good.

Seeing as Cape Town is one of the trendiest cities to live in (well, we think so), it would stand to reason that most of us have a cupboard bursting with clothes that might have been trendy last year, but not so trendy now.

It’s tough looking in vogue all the time, and single-use clothing seem to be an issue up there with single-use plastic. Most people have that one outfit, jeans, or jacket that they just know they will never wear again.

As much as you hope to be able to fit into last summer’s clothes, the sad reality is that those clothes will likely be buried in the back of your cupboard for a few years. Maybe it’s time for some spring cleaning, and with that, doing some good.

There are hundreds of people out there that don’t have the luxury of being fashionable as they try to keep warm during our harsh winter, and to these people, an out-of-fashion jacket is a blessing. That’s not to say donating clothes is reserved for cold weather; any season’s clothing is welcome to those in need.

Finding a place where you can drop these items off should is often the only obstacle, so fortunately the City of Cape Town has set up donation bins all over the CBD. You can find them at:

  • Gardens Commercial High School
  • Central Library (Parade Street)
  • Neighbourgood East City
  • The Onyx (Foreshore)
  • The Square (Buitenkant Street)
  • MGI Bass Gordon (Bree Street)
  • 2 Long Street
  • Rainbow Academy (Adderley Street)
  • Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room (Bree Street)

For those items that may not fit into the bins, you can also contact the CCID coordinators at aziza@capetownccid.org to arrange a drop-off.

Warm days like today make us forget how terrible winter can be. Sometimes a little effort on your part can make a huge difference. Winter’s not over yet…
