If you think that a Kit Kat is simply wafer and caramel wrapped in chocolate, then this might cause you to rethink the humble little chocolate. Some are now even calling it the Inception of choccies.

Now this may not be the kind of revelation that makes you question reality, but still, it raises some serious chicken or egg questions that may lead you down a sweet rabbit hole.

We assume the middle of those tasty bars is simply made up of chocolate and wafers layered together – even the packet says ‘smooth milk chocolate’ and ‘crunchy wafer’ – but there’s a little detail about what goes into the filling that’s not in the description and it’s seriously confusing people.

A BBC documentary series Inside the Factory revealed that Kit Kat bars are actually made from, wait for it, Kit Kat. Confused? Don’t be, it’s actually not that weird.

Anyone who likes Kit Kat knows that the little bars of chocolate are prone to breaking apart, and as the documentary explained, these broken pieces are not suitable for packaging, so Kit Kat simply crushes up the broken pieces and mixes them with sugar, to become the ‘filling’ inside of Kit Kat’s.

So Kit Kat literally contains crushed Kit Kat. To clarify, Nestlé turns those rejects into a paste, which is used to layer the wafers between the bars, giving them that unique taste and texture.

People have taken to social media to share their confusion, with many asking the same question – if Kit Kats are made of Kit Kats, what was the first Kit Kat made from? Duh, obviously Kit Kats.

Some have compared the simple little treat to the movie Inception, where people explore dreams within a dream. Maybe it’s not that meta, but it still makes the chocolate way more interesting than it should be.

“I’m now in an infinite loop trying to figure out what came first,” one person noted, while another said, “It’s just a loop of Kit Kats that never ends.”

“There is a Kit Kat that is made from a Kit Kat that had a Kit Kat inside of it that was made of crushed up Kit Kats that had Kit Kats in them made by Kit Kats.”

I guess that’s why it tastes like a Kit Kat. The less exciting reality is that they probably made the first batch out of chocolate and wafers, only to realise they could kill two birds with one stone by using crushed-up broken bars. But still, it’s a sweet little bit of food-related trivia to have in your back pocket during your next snack break.

And here I was thinking that Kit Kat was just the Lil-Lets version of Tex.
