As summer approaches in Cape Town, there are a few sights we’ve grown accustomed to, such as a permanent glittering queue of cars along the cableway road, GP number-plated 4x4s parked haphazardly along the pavement from Camps Bay to Bantry Bay, and the thump-thump of a red rescue helicopter searching the face of Table Mountain for a missing or injured tourist.
From where I sit on the slopes of Oranjezicht, it’s always an interesting sight to observe ‘Big Red’ slowly hovering next to what feels too close to the cliffs along this frequently claustrophobic mountain. These pilots know their stuff, and the views must be incredible from next to the looming lump of sandstone.
Thanks to a remarkable video on its Instagram page, the City of Cape Town gave us a bird’s-eye view of exactly how hot-sh*t these pilots, and rescuers, really are.
Whether you’re a tourist thinking sandals and socks and a half-litre Coke Zero will suffice for Plattekloof Gorge or a TikTokker wanting to parkour over the fynbos, when you inevitably get in trouble, these guys will be there. This is how they spend their December holidays.
