Posting pictures and a video of him shaving his face on Instagram, he asked his one million followers: “Can you tell what’s different? I’ve shaved off my eyebrows!”

“I’d like to know how I’m supposed to continue a career based largely on raising and lowering different eyebrows without any eyebrows.”

Theroux reckons that in the meantime, “no eyebrows are better than patchy eyebrows”.

Theroux is best known for his work with the BBC, which has included films in which he embeds himself in fringe political groups as well as long-form celebrity interviews. His most famous series, Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends, sees Theroux investigates niche (usually American) subcultures like survivalists, black nationalists, white supremacists, and porn stars.

He frequently lives among or near those involved and has perfected the style of interviewing best described as ‘active bystander’. If you haven’t seen an episode, do yourself a favour and check it out.
