Just as we were starting to worry there weren't enough scooters squirrelling around our city streets, Uber dropped Moto in Joburg.

Just as we were starting to worry there weren’t enough scooters squirrelling around our city streets, Uber dropped Moto in Joburg.

Punted as “Affordable Uber Moto rides at your doorstep”, the new taxi service will allow you to “beat the traffic, navigate narrow lanes easily, and save time”. Those sound like three good ways to get hurt.

Prices start at R25 for 3 kilometres on your first 3 rides, so it’s ideal for short bursts of adrenaline-fuelled terror. According to the text we received on our phones this morning, the service is now active in the Western Suburbs of Johannes CBD, so if you’re in that area, keep your head on a swivel.

The pillion experience is not new to Uber and just last month they introduced Uber Moto Women in the Indian city of Bengaluru. The service connects female riders with female drivers and is designed to address women’s safety and travel needs while also supporting female drivers with flexible ways to earn a living.

As transport costs have risen and city streets have become more and more congested, bike taxis have become popular in most third-world nations, as anybody who has visited India or Thailand would attest, but it’s a first down here in South Africa.

It’ll be a good laugh to take one home from the pub, but you won’t ever find me sober on the back of a 125cc Big Boy.
