Big news for MyCiTi commuters—77 temporary bus stops across the city are about to get a serious glow-up! The City of Cape Town is making these stops permanent, rolling out upgrades in Atlantis, Century City, Melkbosstrand, Blaauwbergstrand, Milnerton, Hout Bay, Mitchells Plain, Summer Greens, Sunningdale, and Woodstock.
Every MyCiTi stop starts off as temporary so planners can fine-tune the best locations before locking them in. After a full public participation process, the City’s urban mobility team has given the green light to build permanent stops at these locations—bringing better visibility, more comfort, and added shelter for passengers.
“This is part of our motto to do all we can to keep Capetonians moving,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Some stops might shift a few metres to meet safety and design standards, but rest assured, they’re here to stay. Construction kicks off this month (March 2025) and will roll out in phases until July 2026.
What to expect at the new stops?
- Branded MyCiTi totems with lighting for better visibility
- Leaning rails for added passenger comfort
- Updated bus service info so you’re always in the know
- Universal access features, including wheelchair-friendly ramps & tactile paving
- Shelters with seating at high-traffic stops
Will this affect your ride? Not really—MyCiTi services will keep running as usual, though you might notice minor delays here and there. Your best bet, as is the case with any public transport, is to plan ahead and download the MyCiTi app for up-to-date schedules.
Construction means work, and the City wants locals to benefit. If you’re keen or know someone who is, register on the City’s Jobseeker Database at your local subcouncil and grab the opportunity.
Thanks for your patience, Cape Town. These upgrades are all about making your commute more extensive, easier, safer, and more reliable.
