Those Weird And Wonderful Theme Camps At AfrikaBurn

AfrikaBurn themed camps remain at its core a testament to what’s possible when people come together with nothing but good vibes and imagination.

AfrikaBurn is nearly nigh, and soon an impressive temporary city will rise from the dust deep in the Tankwa Karoo.

But at the heart of this bizarrely beautiful gathering are the themed camps. These self-organised villages are as much works of art as they are places for getting out of the dust.

More than just campsites, the villages are the Burn, and they are designed and created with the intention of welcoming and entertaining other burners, like houses in the village of Tankwa Town.

Unlike typical festival accommodations, villages at AfrikaBurn are curated. Some resemble wild west saloons, desert oases, futuristic sci-fi outposts, or psychedelic dreamlands.

Others offer immersive experiences: tea ceremonies, sensory installations, sound healing domes, and even pop-up jazz clubs.

Whatever you’re looking for, each village represents a unique blend of visual art, architecture, performance, and hospitality, brought to life by the personalities who inhabit it. In the absence of hierarchy, each village is free to define its own identity. Some may offer a calm space for contemplation, while others deliver chaos and wild energy.

There’s no commercial exchange; instead, everything is given freely. Villagers build stages, cook feasts, design costumes, erect shade structures, and install interactive sculptures—not to sell or profit, but to share and contribute. This year also seems to have plenty to offer those looking for a bit of variety.

One of the most remarkable aspects of these villages is how they reflect the self-reliance that AfrikaBurn is known for. Participation is everything, and villages become dynamic platforms for creativity.

With their eccentric aesthetics, open-door policy, and playful architecture, the villages have become more than just shelters from the desert heat; they transform the harsh environment into something human and deeply meaningful.

As AfrikaBurn continues to evolve, the villages remain at its core as a testament to what’s possible when people come together, not to consume, but to create. So, anyone still looking for a camp to join can check out the AfrikaBurn Theme Camps Facebook page, where you can connect with the inhabitants of these wild and wonderful spaces.

And for anyone wishing to arrive in style, remember that AirduCap is flying to the Tankwa this year, with shuttles standing by to take you to the venue! Gliding in like an angel and swooping out like a phoenix is probably the only way to really experience the Burn.

Godspeed to all the Burners.
