A frantic search for a nine-day-old baby taken over the weekend has ended in Mitchell’s Plain.
Little Mogamat Imaad Shamar was last seen on Saturday, June 28, and was finally found safe in Tafelsig on Monday, per TimesLIVE.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed that authorities wasted no time. “A multi-disciplinary team was assembled after a case was opened on Saturday,” he said.
According to police, the baby’s mother had been at a shopping complex in Bellville when she suddenly fell ill.
“The mother of the baby was at a shopping complex in Bellville when she became nauseous,” Van Wyk explained.
“She left the child in the care of a woman who was with her when she went to the bathroom. On her return the mother could not locate the woman and her baby.”
According to WCMPU, the tiny newborn was taken from Middestad Mall in Bellville by a woman known only as “Chivon”, reported IOL. In a cruel twist of betrayal, the woman had allegedly befriended the mother while she was still pregnant, posing as someone from an organisation that supports young moms with counselling and baby goods.
After the baby was born, “Chivon” invited the mother out for a bite to eat — a small outing that turned into a nightmare. The new mom, still recovering and feeling unwell, excused herself to the bathroom. When she returned, both her baby and “Chivon” were gone.
The child was tracked to a home in Tafelsig, where officers moved swiftly.
A 37-year-old woman has since been arrested and charged with kidnapping.
