With a striking resemblance to Tooter the Turtle, Malusi Gigaba is probably wishing that he could crawl into his shell and stay there for a while.
The former home affairs minister’s attempt to block ex-wife Nomachule Mngoma’s too-revealing TV interview about their failed marriage, allegations of infidelity and pornography has failed, opening the door to a fresh round of public shaming.
Gigaba took his objections to court, claiming that his ex-wife’s interview on the show would “taint my good name and dignity that I have been rebuilding from the past years after [divorce]”.
The courts, however, disagreed, and the matter was struck from the roll, thereby giving Multichoice the green light to hang Gigaba’s dirty laundry up for the world to see.
Multichoice argued that Mngoma would not be sharing fresh issues as the allegations were already in the public domain. MultiChoice’s executive head of legal for general entertainment, Brandon Vermeulen, said Mngoma had a right to speak about her marriage with Gigaba.
He said her comments on Showmax’s Untied were her personal experiences.
“It is not unlawful, unfair, or unreasonable for MultiChoice to stream the show on which Ms Mngoma speaks about her marriage.”
Rubbing salt into Gigaba’s tender spots, MultiChoice attorney Dario Milo told Sowetan on Wednesday that “accumulative costs were also awarded against Gigaba”.
Gigaba has had a rough ride the last few years.
Following the State Capture debacle, Gigaba stood accused of treason, corruption, extortion, fraud and theft after allegedly lubricating the Guptas’ entry into South Africa.
This was followed in 2018 by the leak of a “video of a sexual nature” of the former minister, sparking allegations of blackmail soon after.
After Gigaba eventually resigned in 2018, Wayne Thring, ACDP Deputy President, was quoted as saying, “There can be no doubt that Gigaba has had a checkered past, from his involvement with the Guptas, the Fireblade saga, lying in a court of law, and recent sex tape scandal, it is apparent that Gigaba was involved in digging his own political grave.”
Sounds like a lot of skeletons are about to be exhumed.
