Who Said Test Match Cricket Was Dead?

VVS Laxman withstood severe back spasms to guide India to a thrilling 1-wicket win over the Aussies this morning to ensure that Ricky 'Punter' Ponting is still winless as captain on Indian soil. The hosts were in a bad way at 124-8 chasing 216, but an immense 10th-wicket stand of 81 between Laxman and Ishant Sharma propelled the Indians within touching distance of the win.

There’s something about test matches on the subcontinent that breathes life back into the test format. The glitzy, smash-and-grab, swashbuckling T20 format has taken so much of the focus off the five day game; but with the fifth day drama at Mohali there’s no doubt that this is still the premier form of cricket. Even the Aussies, with their tough-as-nails character, are struggling in the biggest test of them all: overcoming the Indian moxie in their own back yard.

The win puts the Indians 1-0 up in the two-match series. Defeat in the second will certainly dent Australian pride ahead of the forthcoming Ashes series. Bring on Bangalore!
