Marisol Valles, 20-year-old criminology student, recently became police chief of Guadalupe, one of the most dangerous cities in Mexico – because no-one else wanted the job. Guadalupe is second only to Juarez in terms of violence; Valles was “the only person willing to accept the position.”
The city’s previous mayor was murdered in June; public officials are increasingly becoming targets of the cartels, to the extent that police beheadings are thought of as ‘common’. The Guadalupe mayor’s office has one police patrol car. A local newspaper asked the Valles if she feared for her life, to which she responded:
Afraid? Everyone is afraid and it’s very natural. What motivates me here is that the project is very good and can do a lot for my town. I know that we are going to change and remove this.
Hot damn.
