Most of us with a brain and an internet connection already figured that third-party spying via a laptop webcam was entirely possible – but we assumed that the hardware would at least indicate it was in use. Boy, were we wrong about that one.
Third-party spies have actually had the option of accessing your webcam without activating any of the usage indicators for years now.
Marcus Thomas, the former assistant director of the FBI’s Operational Technology Division, told the Washington Post that invasive laptop video recording is “mainly” used in terrorism cases or the “most serious” of criminal investigations. Which, for some reason, hasn’t quite got that reassuring feeling you’d expect it to have.
Advice? A little dot of prestick over your laptop’s camera – problem solved.
