A radical change in strategy by the world’s largest photo provider, Getty Images, will allow online content creators to use some of their images for free. Getty is proposing the use of embedding, similar to embedding YouTube videos, for their stock images.
Getting around watermarks is as easy as downloading illegal music. Instead of relying on licensing fees, Getty will use different channels to gain revenue from their stock photos. The embedded frames will allow Getty to collect user data and provide ad space similar to YouTube embedding.
Embedding also gives Getty more control over their images. If they take an image down from their site, it will be removed from all sites where the image was embedded.
