Why is this no surprise?
JG Zuma High School in Durban had its doors closed on Monday by the school’s trustees because they have not been paid. There’s more to this, though.
The Department of Education had to stop payments to the trustees because “they had failed for more than a year to comply with certain legal requirements”.
Isaac Luthuli, the spokesperson for KwaZula-Natal’s education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni says:
“We indicated that their non-compliance with various pieces of legislation governing use of public funds will eventually create disharmony between the trustees and the department. Still they have not complied. They are fully aware of their non-compliance.”
What on earth have they spent the money on? Because, apparently, there is no problem with teacher’s salaries and school supplies.
It’s quite sad, really. The school is well known for its choir, which has sung at public events and has toured overseas.
Here’s hoping they sort this out quickly. We do not need more kids in this country missing out on a good education.
