There are a series of chimps that were abandoned around 30 years ago after New York Blood Center (NYBC) finished years of painful testing on them. Dropping these chimps into areas that are uninhabited and have no natural source of food or water, the NYBC kept them alive for a few years by dropping off supplies and vaccinating them. Disgusting, right?
Ponso is just one of these chimps that have survived all these years. The 40-year-old chimp was dropped off with his mate and two children more than 30 years ago, and while the others died, Ponso has been pretty lonely. He has relied on a nearby villager, Germain, to survive, receiving bananas and bread from him on a regular basis.
Last spring, the centre announced that it wouldn’t be cutting off its supplies to abandoned chimps, effectively leaving them to die. Shocking and unacceptable, it was a completely disgusting decision. Since then, it has been up to a coalition of welfare groups and generous members of the public to keep supplies coming.
According to one commenter, the chimps cannot be placed into social areas because of the extensive testing that has occurred. Basically, the NYBC and other testing centres should build special rehabilitation centres to look after the variety of animals they have used and abused.
