Normally it’s only years later, following another massive doping scandal, that those with silver medals are bumped up to gold.
Justice was swifter in the case of Spanish Olympic sprinter Bruno Hortelano, who thought he had finished second at the European Championships in Amsterdam.
That’s not at all shabby, but with Churandy Martina disqualified for stepping out of his lane it was gold all the way. Here’s Thrillist:
As he started his post-race interview Hortelano corrected the interviewer, letting her know that he won silver and not gold. A language barrier between the Dutch reporter and the Spanish sprinter lead to a bit of awkwardness before the reporter showed Hortelano on her phone that he had actually won gold.
He celebrated by doing the thing he does best, running off into the distance, presumably to give someone the most excited hug of the European Championships.
He better save some juice in the tank, because he’ll compete in both the 100m and 200m events in Rio.
