Ja-nee ouens, Die Taal maak my sommer vandag baie trots! For the first time ever an Afrikaans feature film will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. It is called Skoonheid and this is a pretty awesome feat considering it will be screened alongside new movies by the likes of Woody Allen, Gus Van Sant, Lars von Trier, and Pedro Almodovar.
The only info I could find about it was that the director is Oliver Hermanus, also responsible for another local cinematic highlight, Shirley Adams. The plot involves “a middle-aged man who struggles to suppress his latent sexual desires, only to realize that, among many other problems, he has an unhealthy and destructive obsession with his friend’s teenage son.”
The festival runs from 11 to 22 May. Steering the Palme d’Or jury this year will be Robert de Niro. For the full list of films show there, click here.
