Just when you thought Earl Rose had locked down the worst thing you’d see at a South African golf course this year, along comes this video from Lake Club Benoni.
Of course, Benoni.
It appears that allegations of cheating set this one in motion, although there’s a clear winner when it comes to the bust-up.
The video has already grabbed international attention, with this from USA Today:
One golfer, who competed in the club championship at Lake Club Benoni in South Africa, was in the clubhouse as a competitor shouted accusations of cheating. The winning golfer — named Mike — took exception to the accusations and responded by, uh, head-butting the guy through a window and punching him in the face repeatedly.
Let’s go ahead and meet Mike and the other golfer, then:
Wow club champs is a serious business. Mike seems to have won the golf and the fight. pic.twitter.com/GzBrSfg7ts

There’s a lot to unpack here.
We may never know if the cheating allegations hold water, but I think we can agree that Mike will never play golf at this course again.
We should also commend the man filming, who responds to a request to stop filming with a firm “no thank you”.
To whoever captured this video, we salute you.
In response to the video doing the rounds, Lake Club Benoni issued a statement on Facebook:
Let’s enjoy a few of the comments below that post:
- If you’re gonna call someone a cheat, make sure you can throw a punch or at least make sure the window is open next time.
- How you allow people wearing flip flops to enter the club house is beyond me. Enforce the dress code and you won’t have these types of individuals using the facilities.
- You’re a thief, man. You’re a cheat! People are giving my beloved Lake Club Benoni a tough time but in all honesty, I get beaten up here LESS than 60% of my visits. Wear a crash helmet when you hit the holes and it’s all good. Holes are great. A-holes in the club room not so much.
- It’s probably the best thing that’s happened to the club. The free publicity to a worldwide audience is fantastic exposure. Maybe the club should consider hosting “Dad fights” type event each week?
Dad Fights – proudly hosted by Lake Club Benoni. I’m in.
Of course, if this club really wants to set itself apart, it has a long way to go before it can rival Durban’s Athlone Golf Club.
Remember this full-scale brawl from back in 2017?
Raise your game, Benoni.
