The crew of the Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters blasted a house in Dublin, California with a cannonball yesterday. I mean, not on purpose; they were trying to fire a homemade cannon at huge containers of water, because a canon’s ability to bust huge containers of water is a myth that needs busting, but they missed.
The team was firing from the grounds of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department bomb disposal range, but somehow missed their giant water-container targets and sent their 15cm projectile through a cinder-block wall, over a nearby hillside, through a suburban house’s front door some 200 metres away, out through the house’s second story, to smash into the dashboard of a minivan. All of which pretty conclusively busts the myths that home-made cannons aren’t totally awesome.
Fortunately for all involved— particularly the show’s producers and hosts, who would be liable —no one was hurt; the house’s residents only noticed the “cantaloupe-sized hole” in their house when the plaster dust began to settle on them. Because I guess that sort of thing happens all the time when you live near a bomb range.
