For followers of the fantasy game Magic: The Gathering (MTG), the game just got a whole lot nerdier with the sale of the rarest card ever, the One Ring, to non other than the moustached Post Malone.
The unique card is part of the recent Lord of the Rings crossover, and is a 1/1 print, meaning it’s the only one of its kind in the world, and Malone willingly parted with the $2 million (R35 million) for one of the rarest of collectables.
The story behind the card’s discovery is equally intriguing. After being ‘debuted’, the card disappeared for a while until finally, a nerd named Brook Tafton emerged from the fires of Mount Doom with the card. Tafton was all too happy to sell the card to someone who would truly appreciate its value.
“When I found the One Ring, the first person who came to mind was Post Malone. I have played MTG since I was a kid and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life-changing.
The One Ring card isn’t just rare, it’s a piece of art. Etched with the original Elvish Black Speech inscription and covered in gold foil, it’s a unicorn to fans and card collectors alike.
“One ring to rule them all.”#MTGxLOTR ‘s ONE ring will be a truly special item in Magic. Found only in English Collector Boosters, see product packaging for details.https://t.co/cMH7KQZcMx pic.twitter.com/Kw91AjoIMg

@brooktrafton When I found the One Ring, the first person who came to mind was @Post Malone. I have played MTG since I was a kid and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life changing. I just really hoped it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I do. This is my dream come true, meeting Post Malone and him buying the One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale. Post Malone @Magic: The Gathering you have changed my life. Things like this don’t happen to people like me, I guess it’s magic. I am forever grateful 🙏 ✨ #postmalone #onering #oneofone #mtg #magic #mint #psa #card #magicthegathering #lordoftherings #trading #tradingcards #theonering #sauron #collector #edition #one #gandalf #tradingcardgame ♬ original sound – Brook Trafton
Ironically, the card isn’t even that strong within the game, but if indeed Post did buy the card for its estimated price tag, it would make it more valuable than any other card in the history of the game, including the famed “Black Lotus” card, which has exchanged hands for only $500 000 (R8.8 million). Lame.
For those who were lucky enough to have girlfriends or boyfriends during the nineties, Magic: The Gathering was the first trading card game and has approximately forty million players worldwide, with over twenty billion Magic cards produced. But only One Ring.
And now Post Malone has the one card that rules them all. His prescioussss.
