I believe it’s safe to say that animal poaching has now gotten completely out of hand. This is a scene I’d rather not try and picture – a herd of 22 elephants, were swooped on by a helicopter, and massacred.
The attack is the worst in Congo’s history, and shows the true scale of the problem on our hands. Poaching is not discriminating, and we’re not the only ones being targeted. It’s turning into an African and Asian problem.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve seen something like this,” said Dr Tshibasu Muamba, head of international cooperation for the Congolese state conservation agency, ICCN, as he surveyed the macabre scene at Garamba National Park.
After killing the elephants, the herd was stripped of their tusks and genitals. The bounty of their attack is suspected to be en route to South Sudan or Uganda, which forms the gateway to Asia for ivory.
