A meeting takes place by officials from the council and miners, voted to represent the former employees. The private meeting was arranged to discuss the future of Grootvlei mine in Springs, since it’s closure in 2010. Over 4000 miners from Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa are out of work and haven’t received their full pay. The miners have been offered an opportunity to train in other skills, while the mine is under negotiation. Set up by MQA ‘Mining Qualification Authority’. They are offering skills in plumbing, tiling, painting, plastering, woodwork and brick laying. Grootvlei Mine is owned by Aurora Empowerment Systems. Directors of the company include Khulubuse Zuma, a nephew of President Jacob Zuma and Zondwa Mandela, a grandson of former president Nelson Mandela. They have had very little involvement with the continuing problems at the mine. The mine has been stripped of most of its assets.
