Cosmetic surgery, beauty products and other aesthetic enhancements have made it possible to change just about every aspect of your appearance, for better or worse. Now you can add permanent eye-colour change to your to-do list.
Following more than a decade of research, Dr Gregg Homer of Stroma Medical believes he has found the answer to permanently changing patients’ eye-colour.
According to Homer, all people – even those with brown eyes – have “blue eyes” underneath the visible layers of darker pigment.
Using advanced laser technology, the entire procedure takes only about 20 seconds but, full effects will only be seen after two to three weeks. The laser is set to specific frequency which interacts with the pigment cells in such a way that they are altered, causing the body to shed them. After the procedure, cells never regenerate.
To date his tests have shown no tissue damage and have not had any negative effects on vision. The doctor says he stills needs another year to complete his research.
Researchers believe the procedure will be available outside the USA in approximately a year and half, and within the country in double the amount on time. Price speculations are hovering around $5 000 (R39 481).
When commenting on the age-old and painfully clichéd line that “the eyes are the windows to the soul” Dr Homer had this to say,
A blue eye is not opaque, you can see deeply into it, and a brown eye is very opaque. I think there is something very meaningful about this idea of having open windows to the soul.
As great as this might sound to some people, maybe they should consider some colour contacts before undergoing irreversible surgery that could potentially leave their face looking like a bad Halloween mask.
