A mourning ritual that is rarely seen, and even more rarely captured on camera, will raise further questions about whether dolphins understand the concept of death.
Moving footage of a dolphin battling to keep her dead calf afloat has been captured and uploaded to YouTube.
The calf was thought to be dead for at least three days when it was filmed in China’s Sanniang Bay being carried on the dorsal fin of its mother.
Fisherman Luo Lieqiangre said he and tourists watched as the 1,5m-long calf fell off its mother’s back several times.
The sea was rough when we saw the dolphins.
The dead animal had a gash on its belly approximately 30cm long, and it wasn’t clear how that had happened.
The little dolphin was dead for two or three days, but its mother still stayed with it and carried it day and night, which has touched all of us and the tourists.
Maybe cetaceans understand the concept of death, like elephants and some apes.
