Following last week’s visit by Hurricane Sandy to New York, a lot of damage has been left in her wake. Several subway stations and tunnels were flooded, and an estimated eight million people were left without power.

During all this chaos, New York Magazine did not only manage to bring out their latest edition on time, but they also managed to capture the scope of the Manhattan blackout with a breathtaking cover photo (see below).

Here is a part of the editor’s note:

The easiest part of a harried three days came Friday around noon, when we met to settle on the cover. A photograph taken by Iwan Baan on Wednesday night, showing the Island of Manhattan, half aglow and half in dark, was the clear choice, for the way it fit with the bigger story we have tried to tell here about a powerful city rendered powerless. We crammed back into the conference room, raced to finish our pages, and hoped, like other New Yorkers, that everyone would find the lights on when they got home.

I should know better by now, but I still cannot get over how unbelievably one-sided the coverage of Sandy was. Four years ago NPR’s Alisa Miller showed how skewed news actually is, favoring some regions far above the rest and leaving others almost totally unreported on (the video is on ted.com and well worth watching).

It would appear that things still have not changed. Even local media just did a rinse-and-repeat on the Sandy stories, with almost nothing on Sandy’s damage to other countries or any comparable coverage of the other major storms we’ve seen this year.

Well it is New york Magazine James, but I do share your thoughts on the rest of the world’s covereage.

    • silly

Agree completely. It has been New York & Sandy all the way and I am not talking about this magazine.

That is true – I’m not talking about this specific cover. Ironically it is perhaps the most apt coverage of Sandy’s effect on New York.
