Android and iOS tend to be known as the big hitters when it comes to international mobile operating system markets, but recent stats paint a different picture of the SA mobile market. Going by install base figures, BlackBerry and Symbian S60 systems hold highest market shares in SA.
According to statistics from Deloitte Digital there are nearly 16 million smartphones in use in South Africa. Their market analysis, seen below, indicates BlackBerry having the largest market share, according to install base.
- BlackBerry: 36%
- Symbian S60: 26%
- Android 22%
- iPhone 8%
- Windows Phone 5%
- Asha Touch 3%
But sales statistics indicate Android smartphones are gaining market dominance.
The sales figures are as follows:
- Android: 48% of sales
- BlackBerry 25%
- Windows Phone: 13%
- Asha Touch: 8%
- iPhone: 6%
