The Weight-Loss Ingredient You’ve Been Missing

This week's diet tip is not an exotic fruit or some weird metabolism booster. It's something we take sort of for granted really...

As we head into winter it is far more tempting (and easier to cover up) to indulge in warm, comfort foods that are often starch and butter heavy, and may not be so good for the down-time maintenance of your beach-bod.

If you are trying to get rid of – or keep off for that matter – those few extra kilos that make your favourite jeans uncomfortably snug, try throwing a handful of mushrooms into your daily diet.

A preliminary study from the Department of Nutrition Science at the University of Buffalo indicates that Portobello mushrooms in particular may help women shed weight by regulating blood sugar.

The study, titled “The effect of mushroom intake on modulating post-prandial glycemic response,” is the first to examine how plant-based glucose can aid in normalizing blood sugar. According to Peter Horvath, associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Science at UB, the “results indicate that the consumption of mushrooms could be useful in regulating glucose levels. This alone may benefit individuals attempting to lose weight and exercise longer.” [The Daily Beast]

Mushrooms are also packed full of anti-oxidants which we all know are fantastic for boosting a wide array of looking-and-feeling-good-type-vibes.

Interesting. Worth a try?
