I fondly remember school outings to Robben Island back in the day. Someone would always get sick overboard, the seagulls would pounce on the slick floating on the ocean’s surface and the rush to find out if said sick kid would eat his lunch began. Yes, we were ruthless.
Now it seems there may be slightly more worrying issues than a kid losing his brekkie. A boat full of tourists somehow found themselves lost last week, with the ensuing investigation revealing that this was not the first time the skipper in question has failed to reach her destination.
This from TimesLive:
The skipper responsible for the latest incident is a former domestic cleaner who now faces tough questions about her navigational abilities…
Two maritime sources involved with the island said Mtingeni had been in trouble before, prompting concern that she might have been “fast-tracked” and did not have the necessary skills.
“You don’t go and experiment [with skippers] out there,” said a tourism stakeholder. “Every time they cover up for her. The next time there might be fatalities.”
Joyce Mtingeni could not be reached for comment. Hopefully she was busy staring at a map, compass in hand, brushing up on the 12km route.
