Sean Penn Did Very Badly With His Green Card Comment At The Oscars

Sometimes it is best to think twice before dropping an inside joke into your Oscars introduction speech. Sean Penn found this out the hard way.

One of the best parts about the Oscars (for those of us who don’t really give much of a shite) is when someone puts their foot firmly in their mouth and gets roundly attacked on social media. This year it was the turn of Sean Penn, the man lucky enough to date our own goddess Charlize Theron.

What caused the foot-lodging? Whilst Sean was on stage presenting the award for Best Picture to ‘Birdman’ director Alejandro González Iñárritu he dropped a little one-liner he may come to regret. This from Yahoo:

Penn said, “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?”

Twitter then went bonkers with people laying into Mr Penn. Some of the more critical below:

And what of the Mexican director who was the butt of the joke? Yahoo again:

Backstage, Iñárritu, who directed Penn in the 2003 film “21 Grams,” said, he found the “green card” comment “hilarious.”

“Sean and I have that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive,” Iñárritu said. “I make on him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you.”

Well there you have it, it was all some kind of inside joke gone wrong. Maybe a pointer to Penn for future conduct though, don’t drop your inside jokes in front of a massive global audience you gringo.
