Hey smokers, as if slowly killing ourselves with those delectable mini-cancer sticks wasn’t punishment enough we can now add destroyers of the Cape peninsula to our feel-bad list. That’s right, a dirty little butt could be the cause of all this heartache.
The Safety and Security Directorate in Cape Town believes there is a chance that the fires may have been caused by a smoker. JP Smith, from said directorate, had this to say to eNCA:
I have just been sent a photograph from someone who whatsapped it to me saying they’ve just seen someone throwing a cigarette out of the window on Boyes Drive, exactly where the fire occurred, so negligence and callus behavior by people putting people and property at risk, people’s lives at risk, so very sad.
We’ve had a huge increase of fires, with dry and windy conditions and I’m afraid negligence by people doesn’t help.
Someone is getting a lump of coal in their stocking this year, as well as what one hopes will be a lengthy spell in one of Cape Town’s notorious correctional facilities.
So far today I have observed two people flicking their butts out of the window of a car. Guys, it isn’t hard, if you can smoke inside your vehicle you can also collect your butts in an ashtray and dispose of them at a later stage.
