  • Blatter Might Not Step Down After All

When you’re arguably the most hated man in football world, coming under attack from every angle in the midst of one of the biggest controversies sport has ever seen, stepping down as president is not so much noble as expected.

When Sepp Blatter announced his decision to eventually step down as FIFA president, a mere four days after winning re-election, there was a mixture of relief and joy. He would still rule the roost until the rumoured December emergency meeting, where his successor would be elected in what has been dubbed an emergency congress, but at least the wheels were in motion to cut this toxic dinosaur loose and reinvigorate the ailing organisation.

Well not so fast, football fans, the turd extraordinaire might have another trick up his sleeve. This from Reuters:

…Blatter had received messages of support from African and Asian football associations, asking him to rethink his decision to step down.

Blatter was honored (sic) by the support and had not ruled out remaining in office, the [Swiss Schweiz am Sonntag] newspaper said, citing an anonymous source close to him.

It appears the rumours have reached those at the top with Domenico Scala, head of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee and the man who will oversee the process of choosing the new president, addressing the news with a few thinly-veiled barbs in Sepp’s direction:

“For me, the reforms are the central topic,” he said, without referring to the interview directly.

“That is why I think it is clearly indispensable to follow through with the initiated process of president’s change as has been announced.”

We shouldn’t count our chickens before they hatch but I cannot see Blatter actually having the balls to run again. Then again if the FBI implicated him in their investigation and he ended up behind bars we wouldn’t have to wonder about the future of football’s governing body. Just an idea guys, throwing them out there…
