You know what you usually get when you ask a Capetonian to write about Jozi, don’t you? Some snide remarks and plenty of references to how nice it is here by the coast.

Enough we say, they don’t call Jozi the City of Gold for nothing. There’s plenty to keep your weekend ticking over, but for now we’ll point you in the direction of a few gems you might not have heard about.

We’re enlisting the help of the folks over at Gummie, who showed us some of Cape Town’s coolest tours last week (HERE). They offer a wide range of activities in and around Jozi, led by their fantastic team of super guides, and I’m pretty sure you’ll find something that tickles your fancy.

All you have to do is book your tour online, meet at the appropriate venue and you’re off. So what’s on offer – well, where to start?

How about exploring way back when with a tour to the Cradle of Humankind, the descriptions below from the site itself:

At just about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Cradle of Humankind is a must-see for all archaeology lovers and anyone curious in the history of mankind. You will get to see the caves that are world-famous for the fossils that were discovered there. Our ancestors have lived in this area for more than 3-million years. It is a well-informative, amazing discovery and experience not to be missed!

Come now, how many of you have visited the Cradle of Humankind when it sits right on your doorstep?

If that’s not your vibe and you’re more into strolling the streets Gummie offer a number of fantastic walking and cycling tours.

A two- or four-hour bike tour of Soweto, a ride through the Maboneng Art Precinct, a city Graffiti and Street Art walk – they’re all there, but we’re going to single out the Newtown Art Walk:

Zama Phakathi is an art curator and owner of Stop Sign art gallery in Newtown. It is one of a kind, mobile art space based in a shipping container. Zama has moved locations several times and chose Newtown to be her new base. Having worked with South African artists for years, she knows the local art scene like the back of her hand. Specially for Gummie, Zama has agreed to take a small group of people on an Art Walk around Newtown’s studios and galleries. During this three hour long experience, you will meet the artists, see the art works in the making and get a unique insight into the art world of South Africa’s biggest city. It is a truly unique opportunity!

You see your city is what you make of it really, so when you next hear someone complaining about doing the same old garbage week in and week out you tell them to wisen up.

Gummie is also a blessing in disguise for all those who end up playing tour guide to friends and family who visit the city. Now you can hand them off, lovingly of course, to the pros and let them ensure everyone goes home happy.

Or you could just carry on whining about how you always do the same old thing, everyone loves having someone like that around.

Go on, check out what they have to offer HERE.
