Derick Hougaard Gives His Version Of Events Following Social Media Row [Audio]

Earlier this week, Derick Hougaard and ex-wife Karlien van Jaarsveld were involved in an ugly row over the safety of their children, which played out on social media.

We covered all of this yesterday here, in a story we later updated with Karlien’s lengthy Facebook post detailing her version of events.

She didn’t hold back, saying that her ex-husband suffered from “pill and alcohol addiction”, “has been in and out of rehabilitation centres several times”, and was “out of control” on Tuesday evening when with their twin boys.

Ek is ‘n ouma van 6 kleinkinders. Hoe ek oor hulle voel kan ek nie beskryf nie. Daar is nie woorde nie. Ek het vanaand gedoen wat enige ouer of grootouer sou doen indien hulle die belange van hulle kinders op die hart dra. Karlien is tans in die Kaap vir werk. Sy’t ‘n oproep ontvang dat Derick erg onder die invloed van drank is tussen massas mense met die seuntjies. Ek het ook verskeie oproepe en boodskappe ontvang van mense wat dit bevestig het. Sy het my gevra om asb die seuntjies te gaan haal. Die nanny was ook by. Die volgende oomblik klim Derick in ‘n hyser en maak die deur toe voor die nanny nog kon ingaan. En daar het die soektog begin. Vir langer as ‘n uur. Hy het NIEMAND laat waar hy is met die seuns nie. Aan elke persoon daarbuite wat Karlien (of my) slegsê of kritiseer – wat sou jy gedoen het as jou kinders wegraak in die sorg van ‘n persoon wat so besope is dat hy letterlik oor mense geval het. Ek het getuies. Sou jy nie ook enige moontlike platvorm gebruik om jou kinders op te spoor nie? Ek sal dit weer en weer en weer doen. Ek sal met my lewe baklei vir my kinders en kleinkinders. En die wat my werklik persoonlik ken, sal weet ek praat die waarheid. Nadat Derick weereens, soos verskeie kere in die verlede, nie die volle prentjie gee op sosiale media nie, het ek besluit om te praat. Ek kan nie langer stilbly nie. Derick, ek hoop jy word gesond. Ter wille van jou 2 seuntjies. Hulle het jou nodig.

Otherwise, you can read a translation of some of the talking points Derick raised in his defence:

“We were the safest we could be, I  am really comfortable when I am on Loftus,” Hougaard told Martin. The former rugby star added that van Jaarsveld [pictured below dishing out some serious side eye to Derick] couldn’t get hold of him. “My phone was off. We were with friends and the children started to get cold so we went to the Summit Bar.”

“It is disappointing. It is understandable when people call someone a bad husband or a bad boyfriend. But it is disappointing to call me a bad father. We made plans for the holidays and now daddy has to stay home alone,” he added.

Hougaard also said that he is disappointed in the way certain individuals spoke to his girlfriend, singer Nadine. “The manner they spoke to her is unexpectable and she doesn’t deserve it. She is great to the kids,” he explained.

When asked if he had spoken to van Jaarsveld after Tuesday night, Hougaard had a short answer; “’n Stil bek is ’n heel bek.”

The rugby star also had holiday plans with his kids but after the ordeal on Tuesday, that won’t be happening. “The big pity is that we made a lot of plans with the kids before Nadine goes away to Belgium. So daddy is gonna have to be home alone.”

Maybe the involved parties should take a little time away from social media to let things cool off a touch…
