It’s clear that Derick Hougaard and Karlien van Jaarsveld are never going to rekindle their romance from years gone by.
The now-divorced couple have twin boys together, and they were at the centre of an acrimonious row on social media last night.
It all started when Afrikaans singer Karlien posted on Instagram about her kids being missing.
She has since deleted the post, but Channel24 have the info:
“We can’t find my sons. Derick is drunk; we don’t know where the children are please! This is how they look, please help to search!” she posted in Afrikaans on Instagram, along with a photo of the two blonde boys, smiling and wearing Christmas hats.
I don’t have children, so I will never understand that panic, but Derick was certainly less than impressed.
He took to Twitter to squash the idea that he had been an irresponsible father:
For the souties, that translates to “Apparently there is chaos about my children who were ‘gone’ while they slept safely next to their daddy tonight. It was before Karlien’s mom came and grabbed them.”
Then Karlien was back on Instagram, in another post she has since deleted, saying that she had the children back under her watch:
To finish the back and forth, at around 11PM, Derick fired back on Twitter, in a tweet he has now deleted:
Yup, that isn’t even Karlien’s Twitter account.
At the time of writing, this tweet was still live, but we’ve screenshat below for posterity.
Ronel Brink is Karlien’s mother and agent, and Derick is not a fan:
Just wondering what a “n #^**!!!!!!!!!!!!” is? I mean, he isn’t calling her that, is he? Maybe it’s naaier?
UPDATE: Karlien has now given her full version of events via a Facebook post:
Via Google Translate, here’s that in English:
Thank you for all those who jumped last night to help me, I was a waste of worry. I am in the Cape for work and have received several calls from friends and colleagues that Derick is out of control and in a large stadium of 12000 people at the Jakaranda carols concert while the twins are with him. My nanny who always went with me let me know that he disappeared with the children and nobody could get hold of him, he also dropped his phone. I felt so powerless. It was the longest hour of my life. Derick may only supervise the children according to the court order because of his pill and alcohol addiction, and because of the life of my children and my children, he has been at risk several times. He has been in and out of rehabilitation centers several times. I was terrified of concern because I feared the safety of my children at the stadium.
Thank you for all the artists who have helped and know the truth of my situation, and the police at the stadium who helped. I am grateful forever for you. Jo Black and Jacques Du Plessis found them in a restuarant outside Loftus along with a still very busy Derick. My mom immediately picked up the children and they are now safe at home.
My and Joe’s lives just revolve around our 3 children. Since I was divorced from Derick, I do everything in my power to give the boys a good life despite the fact that Derick has not been paying maintenance for years. Despite Derick’s open letters to the media and social media efforts to badly hurt me and my family, I’ve always tried to have our boys a good picture of their father. It breaks my heart thinking that they had to see him like this. It’s the worst thing for us that our private media in the media should be the full time.
The only reason why I posted a video on Instagram on Instagram is because I was hysterical of concern and that thousands of people could immediately help my children in that hour. I know that there are many parents who may be in the same position as me and struggle with the same problems, which may not reach thousands of people immediately or whose mothers can not drive and help the children quickly. Perhaps it is time for the truth to come out, because the truth makes man free. No child in the country or in the world deserves to be insecure or feeling alone in any circumstances, no matter if their parents are known or unknown.
At the time of writing, Derick has yet to respond.
