Never a dull moment in the service industry.

When someone isn’t asking to speak to the manager, people are messing around with the bill, inspiring crowdfunding campaigns or, as is the case here, causing the waitress to become unnecessarily involved in their family issues.

It’s no wonder people in the service industry drink more than most.

This week, a waitress at a Paarl pub was given a tip of almost R20 000.

    Sounds like the dream, right?

    News24 with more:

On Wednesday, Netwerk24 reported that the patron at Breezy Hill had paid his bill of R379 – for several drinks, including brandy, whiskey and Jägermeister – and had included a tip of R19 621 to be charged to his credit card.

Apparently, the guy actually wanted to give her R1 million but decided to go a little lower.

The waitress maintains that the customer had not been drunk and knew what he was doing, having checked with him that he was fully aware of the amount of money.

She reportedly said the man had been speaking of how many people he helped and had claimed that he owned a number of farms.

The next day, it all came crashing down.

…the man’s wife approached the establishment’s owner, Andy Parr, and asked for the money to be returned.

As the money had not yet reached his account, Parr was able to reimburse her.

The woman then tipped the waitress R100.

Awkward. Not as awkward as it must have been when the customer staggered home to tell his wife about his good deed, but still awkward.

    Cue the crowdfunding…
