Welcome to another episode of ‘uniquely South African ways to prevent crime’.
Yeah, we have to be on our toes, and crooks are always trying to stay one step ahead of the game.
Social media is full of people talking about remote signal jammers and other ingenious ways for car thieves to get away with your wheels, but sometimes old school is the best method of prevention.
Take for example this Ford Figo that was spotted by Durban estate agent Trudy Beetge, as she was driving down Alan Paton Road in Glenwood on Tuesday:
Yeah – chained to a pole.
She told her story to TimesLIVE:
“I just thought it was hilarious. When I saw it, I was like ‘no man, this can’t be real’ so I did a u-turn to see if it was really was chained to the pole,” Beetge told TimesLIVE.
When she saw that her eyes were not deceiving her she took a snap and shared it with friends and family to brighten their day. The picture made its way on to Facebook where people were left in stitches…
Beetge said that she did not know who the owner of the car was, but suspected that it could belong to a pupil from a nearby high school.
“I don’t know who the owner is, but something tells me it might be a schoolboy from the school across the street, who just got his first car but can’t afford insurance,” laughed Beetge.
Did she really laugh as she said that? I guess we’ll never know.
According to Facebook user Pete Graham, his “dad invented this in 1952 in Durban … never had a car stolen”.
A car chained to a pole in Durban. Yes, that’s the whole story.
